I recently watched serial experiments lain, an anime from 1998 that has become a cult classic within the ‘weird art snob’ anime fans. (So people like me)
And it’s, interesting, to say the least.
It was a particularly tough watch for me as it is a slow burn of a show.
On top of that the fact that I watched this in the middle of Jujutsu Kaisen s3, attack on titan, and the chainsaw man movie phase. All of which are insanely fast paced shows.
This felt like sitting in an empty room after leaving a night club.
Now talking about the show itself.
I adore the early 2000s/Late 90s paranoia of the internet. I love how people had no fucking idea how anything worked. To them the internet really was an unbelievable piece of tech. Which gave birth to so many interesting piece of media, to mention some I like:
Pulse
Suicide Club
Paprika
Perfect blue
Serial Experiments Lain follows the life of Lain, a girl who becomes obsessed with “the wired” (the internet, basically) and finds out that there might be an alternate reality hidden inside it. All the while mysterious forces in the real world try to hunt her down.
The show takes the idea of an alternate online persona and exaggerates it to the point where the people can really live inside the wired independently.
I personally really enjoyed the show as I seem to wonder about the online presence of people myself. Looking at them putting on personas they can never live up to in their real life.
Anyways, enough talk. 9/10 pretty good show. Also the opening song is insane, listen to it.
Now let’s talk about the screening
The first M!ME screening was done last sunday. And it went pretty well.
36 ppl signed up. More than what we were expecting.
The screening really helped me figure out what I need to do in the future.
(More screenings, that is)
You can see some photos here.
Thankful to everyone who showed up.
